This issue is there while you have done the installation of the new version of the Antivirus there in the system, so you just try to do this thing there for these issue may this will help you to overcome, so for that thing you have to make the upgrade for this application by the latest released version 5.0.94.0, may this will help you to use this application for the system.
Re: Getting ‘User rules file contains invalid data’ message in ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5
This kind of the issue is mostly with the XP Home SP3 32 user I have seen, so as per the condition you have done some of the changes there in the setting for that application so according to my ideas let the setting to change to the default, that means that make the changes to the setting there for this application and make this to the default as it was during the installation of these Antivirus.
You have to disable some of the feature for the Antivirus in the setting so make the verification for the setting there for the application.

I think you have to make the upgrade for the Antivirus manually to make the use of this antivirus, so you have to make this verification that whether this is due to the Update issue or something like that May the updating is not done properly there in the System. So you just need to make the reattempt for the updating of the Antivirus there in the system you are using. So for that you have to uninstall this Antivirus completely and make the new installation of this same Antivirus there in the System.

There may be the chances there that the CD’s that you are using may be the coincide with the attempt for the purpose of the open files on CD's that you are using, so make sure whether the CD’s still play properly. That means that if you are using the copy CD’s then may the burning of the discs is not done properly and may you have used the old version of the Nero to burn the discs.
Re: Getting ‘User rules file contains invalid data’ message in ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5
There might be the problems there in the clean installation of version 5.0.93.0 of NOD32 Antivirus there in the system, so you just have to mount the USB hard drive by just plug in to the thumb drive and see whether it have some of the effect. So for that you just have to make the USB hard drive port to be switch between the loading and unloading the thumb drive on the front panel for each USB port, and make the a complete lockup for the fourth as well as final port. After this thing you have to reboot the Antivirus there in the System that you are using.
Re: Getting ‘User rules file contains invalid data’ message in ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5
There are the issue for this Antivirus that I have seen is that it can’t able to mount the external Hard drives, and because of that thing there are the issue for getting the message "user rules file contains invalid data" errors. And also this issue comes whenever you install or upgrade the ESET’s Antivirus there in the System. So for that there is the need for the Application to be updated with the latest version of the ESET’s Antivirus.
