First check whether your HDMI is coming from your graphic card or not? If this is a scenario then there is a possibility that your graphic card unable to take sound. I know some graphic cards that don’t take sound. For avoiding this problem you have to use some special jumper settings. If this is a case I advise to use HDMI from the GPU to the TV after this get your sound card with optical out and after doing this connect it your TV. If you just have red connection and white connection then there standard jack is more than enough. In this case there is no requirement of sound card. One disadvantage is that it gives low quality sound just about 2.1 instead if 5.1.
Re: How to make 5.1 speaker works when hdmi is plug in
If my information is right about ATI HD 3000 and 4000 series. It has built in sound card for sack of HDMI audio. If I am not wrong you have two soundcards. In this case you have to change default audio device. If you unable to perform this thing than you have to change your default audio device. If this not works for you simply jump to your device manager and disable your audio device. I am not sure, this solution works for you or not. Never try to perform too much experiment with your pc. Take an advice of experienced person about this issue like your engineer and all that who has some tech. knowledge regarding hardware peripherals.

Firstly check whether there is an option available to split the sound between your TV and computer. As far I come to know after goggling ATI HD series card have sound processing chip. And to work normally it requires built-in Realtech sound. If this functionality is not available on your platform this solution never works. Never try to do too much testing with your pc. Take an advice of qualified person about this issue like your engineer and all that who has some tech. information about this. If you still unable to get your goal simply make visit to your nearest service center. they will definitely solve this issue.

I got this solution from Microsoft’s official side.
- Go to Sound panel
- Select the default playback device as your speakers
- click on "Recording" tab
- enable "Show Disabled Devices” by simply right clicking on it.
- and click "Enable" after Right click on the new device, similarly do for setting new device
- Double click on the new device explore Properties window
- click on "Listen" tab
- check "Listen to this device" checkbox
- choose your HDMI device from the "Playback through this device" list
