Details of chkdsk command

I like to know everything about computer system. When I am doing some stuff that time I see something like CHKDSK. I never heard anything about this so I want to know what is CHKDSK is and what is the working of CHKDSK or anything which help me get some knowledge about this. Please anyone give me some detail or tips for this. If possible than give some example or working of CHKDSK, so it’s help me to understand it properly. Thanking you in advance. MS-DOS versions 2.x - 4.x used chkdsk.com.
MS-DOS versions 5.x and beyond used chkdsk.exe.
