Processor upgrade for Dell Dimension 8200
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop computer which is powered by Dell Dimension motherboard and an Intel pentium 4 processor running at 1.8 ghz. A friend of suggested that I get the processor upgraded and suggested a Intel SL7EY processor running at 2.8ghz. Hence I want to know if the processor will work on my computer or not? Also will upgrading the processor improve the speed of the computer? Please share some useful information about this issue. Thanks in advance.
Re: Processor upgrade for Dell Dimension 8200
The best solution to your problem would be to contact the Customer support of Dell computers. The computer which you are using is having a custom motherboard manufactured for Dell and hence the specifications for the motherboard will not be available. The customer support executive at the Dell will be able to provide correct information about the issue.
Re: Processor upgrade for Dell Dimension 8200
The information about the processor is available on the official website of Intel. There is a section on the official website of Intel knows as "Processor Spec Finder". Enter the model of the processor and click on GO. The website will list all the features of the processor with the list of compatible motherboards. Check the list of the compatible motherboards and see if the motherboard is listed on it or not.
Re: Processor upgrade for Dell Dimension 8200
Apart from the motherboard of the computer, the processor compatibility depends on the BIOS of the motherboard. BIOS of the system is responsible for saving all the information required for booting of the computer. If the BIOS of the system is not compatible with the processor, it will not detect the processor.
Re: Processor upgrade for Dell Dimension 8200
The processor which can be installed on the motherboard of the computer depend on the FSB/memory that can be handled by the motherboard. If the motherboard is not able to work on the same FSB as the processor, it will result in the processor not working on lower frequency and hence leading to low performance of the processor. Hence check the FSB of the motherboard and processor and see if they match.
