Different types of DVD standards
Hi,
I was just surfing around to buy a DVD writer for my daily data backup work. There are many traditional optical driver but the standards used by them confuses me. One type of DVD drive shows up burning of a 4GB DVD while other shows up 8GB. What does this indicates. I am aware of blur rays and high data storage capacity. But they are best for multimedia content. What but them normal data backup. What are the different standards used in DVD's.
Re: Different types of DVD standards
If you are not aware then there are actually two main standards of a DVD RW which is indicated in the system of - and +. There is also a third standard, the DVD-RAM, but it is intended primarily for professional use and is not intended to base the general public. Indeed, the DVD-RAM is not compatible with DVD players and most PC drives and recorders.
Re: Different types of DVD standards
Yes the drive supports for DVD RAM type of discs are rather rare, only few manufacturers such as LG Electronics and Panasonic offer burners operating the DVD-RAM. In case of a traditional DVD-R/RW, it comes in two versions the DVD-R and DVD-RW. The first one is the normal recordable drive and the other one is rewritable which can be used again and again for regular purpose.
Re: Different types of DVD standards
The DVD + R / RW offer you much better storage ability than the normal one. This is widely used and comes in the same recordable and rewritable media. The support for data storage is allowed to use upto 8.5GB. So this gives out a double size than the normal recordable media. It is used but rarely visible. The only difference is the increase in storage capacity.
Re: Different types of DVD standards
There are different standards in the DVD media because they were created and launched by different organizations wishing each corner the market that accounts for storage on DVD recordable .To complicate the situation and offer each their own media, blank media are clearly not compatible with many systems. But as compare to older time today the use has become universal. You can switch to any media you want.
Re: Different types of DVD standards
With a multi-burner supporting different standards, the user may be get a bit confused on which standard to choose first. This depends on your need simply. According to numerous tests available on the net and / or performed by professionals, it seems that the DVD-R is the format that has the best compatibility with DVD players. It is stable and you can rely on the same for long time.
