How does MAC filtering work
Hi,
To play a mutiplayer game I have to connect some computer each other. This comprises of computers running on mac, windows and also Livebox. I had found the mac filters are best to configure and provide safety to in the same manner. I need information on how does this service work and how to configure its settings with other systems. How does a MAC Filtering work.
Re: How does mac filtering work
In Filter MAC Address what happens is if your hardware allows it then disable the broadcast, which broadcasts across your network login. The same is not not possible with the Livebox), Set the option and SSID Broadcast to Disabled. Each network adapter has a physical address of its own, so-called MAC address. This address is represented by 12 hexadecimal digits grouped in pairs and separated by dashes. For that only your machines can connect to your wireless network, you can define a list of access rights (ACLs) based on their MAC addresses.
Re: How does mac filtering work
Before setting MAC filtering, you must find the MAC addresses of network adapters for computers to connect to your Wi-Fi router. In Windows, click Start, click Run, type cmd and then click OK. In the command window that opens, type the command ipconfig / all and then confirm with Enter. Your network configuration is displayed with each network adapter, its physical address, that is to say, its MAC address. Note the address for the Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection.
Re: How does mac filtering work
If you have other computers attached to your network then same steps can be used what mentioned in the above post. Repeat for the other computers that need access to wireless Livebox. In the interface of the Livebox, click the Wireless Network menu. Select Enabled MAC Address and then click Edit MAC filter list. Select the Allow only listed computers to access the wireless network. Enter the MAC address of the Wi-Fi adapter to your computer in the text box MAC address. Click the Add button.
Re: How does mac filtering work
Once you have proper setup the mac filtering then only your computer can now connect to your wireless network. But what is there any data transmitted. Anyone in the coverage area of your Wi-Fi can indeed intercept packets flowing to analyze and read their contents. To protect this, only one solution encrypt exchanges. For this, the Wi-Fi incorporates a mechanism for encryption of data, it is the WEP for Wired Equivalent Privacy.
Re: How does mac filtering work
With symmetric encryption 40 or 128 bit WEP does not protect your data 100%. Indeed, the WEP key does not change regularly, just a hacker to listen for transmissions exchanged deduce after some time your WEP key. To increase the effectiveness of WEP, we recommend that you regularly change your key, once per week for example.
