What is CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data)?

I have heard about CDPD wireless modem but I don't know about CDPD. So can anyone tell me what is CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data)?

Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) is the technology that marks a new era in wireless data communication.
