Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
Hi all,
I just installed in server 2008. Its comes with 5 User CALs. I purchased another 5 User CALs becaues there are 10 people in total.
Now my question is about Device CALs: There are 10 people on the network, does that also mean I need to have 10 Device CALs for each computer that connects to the server?.... Please confirm.
Were do I register Device CALs?
Thanks.
Re: Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
The answer to your question is simple, You will need individual Device for each computer that connects to your server. You should have 1 for each device that connects to the Server.
Please go through these 2 links:

and

Hope this helps.
Re: Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
Depending on how many you already have but you should have 1 for each device that connects to the Server. If you want you can check out the following link. A Client Access License ("CAL") is a software license distributed by software companies such as Microsoft to allow clients to connect to its server software and use the software's services. As to if they are User or Device CALS this depends on what you are using and if you need to implement Terminal Services.

its a file server. Do i need terminal services for a file server...?
Re: Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
Yes you will require the terminal services for a file server. Terminal services will be required on the server for installing the Licensing server on the network, which will be needed while accessing the server from any device.
Re: Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
Should I register the Ts under the Domain there is only 1 or the Forest?
How many Ts CALs will I need for 10 people?
Re: Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
Register the Terminal services under forest and not under domain. Under forest you will be able to run the TS for multiple domains. To know the exact number of CAL's required for TS you will have to visit the official microsoft support site.
Re: Questions about User CALs and Device on Server 2008
Even i think that you will get the exact numbers of the CAL's required for Terminals from the Microsoft's Official Site. Also I would like to recommend you to register your terminal services under the forest. Because you will able to run the multiple domain under the forest.
