CD Rom not detecting in Linux
Hi,
I am trying to install a CD ROM drive in my Ubuntu desktop. But the same is not working. It is not detecting the drive. As the ROM has does not have any hardware issue. The trays is getting open and closed. I tried some other options too but no success yet. Second thing after installing what are the ways by which I can represent a drive in Linux. The same which is in Windows. Like C drive, D drive, etc.
Re: CD Rom not detecting in Linux
The first step is to create the boot disk. This disk allows the system to prepare and load Linux. You must choose the image depending on your hardware (especially by choosing the type of CD-ROMs and hard drives). You will find the images on the CD of your distribution (directory / bootdisk). If you have an IDE hard disk and your CD-ROM is not exotic, use the image named bare (read the README file otherwise). Under Windows, run rawrite (present in the same directory as the image) and then specify the image and the destination drive (floppy drive in our case). Under Linux, use the dd command to copy the image.
Re: CD Rom not detecting in Linux
You can make the ROM work by creating the root disk. This disk contains the files necessary to run the linux commands. You will proceed in the same manner as for the boot disk and choose an image file (directory / Rootdisk). Probably the file color.gz appropriate (if not read the README). Then after that insert the boot disk in the floppy drive and restart your computer. The computer then load linux output: boot: Press the Enter key to continue. The loading continues (take the opportunity to check that linux has recognized your CD-ROM if it is not the case, you need to change image files). Then a message will be displayed equivalent: VFS: Insert ramdisk floppy and press ENTER. After that remove the boot floppy and insert the root floppy. Linux supports a small file system memory with the important linux commands (like fdisk). You can install Linux from CD-ROM now if everything went well (in order setup slackware for example).
Re: CD Rom not detecting in Linux
Each device is represented by a file in the / dev directory. The name of the disk depends on its type. Discs (hard drives, DVD / CD-ROM) IDE and EIDE drives are named / dev / sda for the first disk (primary master), / dev / hdb for the second (primary slave), etc.. SCSI drives are the ones called / dev / sda, / dev / sdb, etc.. The hard disk partitions are treated as separate units. The first partition on the first IDE disk is called / dev/hda1, the second / dev/hda2, etc. (same for other drives). To list the partitions on a hard drive, run: # fdisk -l /dev/hda
