Hi,
may be the Icon you are referring to is not a shortcut icon.
Please let us know what you see here.
Right click on the IE icon (shortcut) on your desktop nowselect "Properties" from the menu. Click the "Change Icon" button on the General tab.

I think if you reinstall IE7 or roll back to IE6 will resolve the problem since it will take you to setup program & will check for the installation. You can delete the Icon by changing the attributes too may be this will work out for you. Click on the Task Bar and select Properties from the context menu ... Start Menu Tab ... Select "Start Menu" option (not the Classic Start Menu) ... will be your start menu in XP to change the version and will remove Internet Explorer from your desktop and will be in the XP Start menu places. Click the Customize button ... and ensure that "Show on Start Menu '- Internet - Internet Explorer is selected. Save your changes. Now in theory if the properties of the Task Bar back and back to the Classic Start Menu changes, then the envelope of the System of Internet Explorer to the menu from the desktop are moved from the start ... Hopefully showing the correct icon.
