MPQ file is an MoPaQ Compressed Archive.

MoPaQ is an archiving file format used in several of Blizzard Entertainment's games.

The mpq file extension identifies an archiving file format specifically used by Blizzard Entertainment computer games. The .mpq file stores, in a compressed format, a range of data, necessary for the game, including images, progress information and sounds. The capabilities of this file format include compression, encryption, file segmentation, extensible file metadata, cryptographic signature and the ability to store multiple versions of the same file for internationalization and platform-specific differences. MPQ archives can use a variety of compression algorithms which may also be combined.

A file with .mpq extension is a Xtra Cache file. The easiest way to open an MPQ file is to double-click on it and let PC decide which default application should open the file. If no program opens the MPQ file then you probably don't have an application installed that can view and/or edit MPQ files.

Other types of files may also use the MPQ file extension.
