Re: Creating an association in the folder options control panel
In the Open With dialog box, select the program that you wish to associate with this file extension. You may want to turn on "show file extensions for known file types". Go to My Computer, tools, then options and check this box. In order to create file associations on your system, you can do it in either of the ways.
1. Using the folder options tab in Windows Explorer
2. Using the folder options tab in Control Panel
3. By right clicking on the file and selecting "Open With"
4. By editing the registry.
Re: Creating an association in the folder options control panel
I use Windows XP and I found "Folder Options" in the control panel. If you don't see the program that you want, the click "Browse" and navigate to the programs ".exe" file, select it and then click "OK". Then go into your control panel and open "Folder Options." Click the "File Types" tab and you will see "Extensions, File types." Go down the list under Extensions and look for your extension.
Re: Creating an association in the folder options control panel
Your computer doesn't have a default program to open the file type you may have. Click on Start-->Control Panel-->Folder Options-->File Types. Scroll down to the file extension that you wish to associate and high light it. Now click on "Change". You have now associated a file extension with a program.

I think that there are two ways to get to the functionality that was in this tab in XP:
- The right-click "Open With" command for individual files. For more information about this, open Help and find the topic called "Change the program that opens a type of file."
- Open the Control panel and visit Default Programs. There are a few settings there, such as "Set your default programs" and "Associate a file type with a program."
