How to check whether SMPS is working or not

Hello,

Last night my computer was working fine but today when i started my computer i does not start, its power button also remain static, literally nothing was happening, so I called my friend for asking what would be the problem, he suggest me that there would be SMPS problem, so does there would be chances of crashing SMPS of PC, and how to check whether it was working fine.

I will suggest you very simple way to check whether your SMPS working or not, you can check your SMPS without connecting to motherboard by simply plug the power cord and switch on, but make sure that you need to have the 12 volt supplied to SMPS.

If you have ATX SMPS can be checked by short circuit the green and black wires and power on.

I suggest do not take risk because if you are not able to provide the required voltage then your SMPS fan will damage, and else You should not bother to check any power supply in the motherboard. You need to take the motherboard to service centre if faulty.In that case they may provide you warranty for the replaced component.

If you want to check the SMPS without connecting it to the motherboard, you could see the two wire green and black which you have to short them (using any piece of wire/paper clip) in the 24 pin motherboard connector of the SMPS.
Connect any device, say a system fan would be appropriate, to any 4 pin molex, and it should work.

Do this at your own risk,:bleh: (although there isnt much)

if the pc does not seem to be cooling problem and all appears well connected / nested (both components as electrical cables) I think initially it will have to test with another PSU.

Connect Pin No. 14 & 15 on SMPS, if the fan moves then SMPS is working fine else SMPS is faulty. :thumbup1: :cool:

use small wire and short circuit green &black it is easy but try this on good wall outlate for yuor sefty

Computer smps checking method:

Step 1: cabinet open the smps all connection remove it.

Step 2: ATX SMPS can be checked by short circuit the green and black wires and power on

Step 3: SMPS Short green and black cable when smps fan working

Step 4: After checking fan not working,SMPS Problem

You can eaily test the power supply whether it is working or not by shorting the PSU with a copper wire on 13 and 14 pins considering that you have a 24 pin one power supply (not sure about correct pin numbers though). After shorting give it some time to discharge static current, the thing is PSU's can store a migty charge which really could kill. So leave the PSU unplugged overnight to let it discharge.
