Vista: Restoring personal files using the Windows old file

Previously i was using a Xp system, 2 days back i perform a Custom Installation of Windows Vista, replacing a Windows XP installation.

I heard some where that the old operating systems files will be created automatically in a Windows.old folder. But i dont know much about it and i want to restore the personal files from old window folder.

Could anyone of you can help me in this case ?

When you perform the custom installation of Windows Vista that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, Windows Vista creates a Windows.old folder that contains the files from the Microsoft Windows XP installation.

[*]The Windows.old folder contains the following from your replaced Windows XP installation:

1. Windows XP files
2. Documents and Settings
3. Program Files

• Now to locate the Windows.old folder in Windows Vista:-

1. Click Start
   
   
2. Type drive:\windows.old in the Start Search box, and then click Windows.old in the Programs list.
   
   
3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or click Continue.

• Restore XPs My Documents Folder to Vista:

It is advisable when restoring this folder to place it in Windows Vista’s “Documents” folder. However, you can relocate this folder where-ever you would like. Here’s how to restore the old My Documents folder:

1. Locate your Windows.old folder.
   
   
2. Open Windows.old and locate: Documents and Settings\UserName
3. Right click the My Documents folder and select “Cut”.
   
   
4. Go to Start>> Documents.
   
   
5. Right click the Documents folderand select “Paste”.
   
   
6. Your XP My Documents folder will now reside in the Documents folder of Windows Vista.

Restore other personal files located in your Windows.old folder in the same mannor as outlined above. Once you are finished restoring all of the files that you need, you can safely delete the Windows.old folder.

Restore the Desktop folder


If you did not store any files or data on the Windows XP desktop, you can skip this step. You can open the Desktop folder in the Windows.old folder to verify that only shortcuts and no data files were located on the Windows XP desktop.To restore the Desktop folder from the Windows XP installation, follow these steps:

1. Locate the Windows.old folder, and then open the following folder:Documents and Settings\UserName
   
   
2. Right-click Desktop, and then click Cut.
   
   
3. Close all windows in Windows Vista.
   
   
4. Right-click a blank area on the Windows Vista desktop, and then click
   
   Paste.

The Windows XP Desktop folder appears as an icon on the Windows Vista desktop.
