To change file type icons in windows XP follow these simple steps:
- Click Start button
- Go to Control Panel
- Click on Appearance and Themes
- Then click Folder Options
- In the Folder Options dialog box, click the File Types tab
- Select the file type you wish to change
- Then click Advanced
- In the Edit File Type dialog box, click Change Icon
- In the Change Icon dialog box, click Browse
- Navigate to the new icon you want to use
- Select it and then click Open
- Click OK
- Then click Close

Changing individual desktop icons
- With your mouse, right-click on the desktop icon that you want to change.
- Click on “properties”.
- A new window will open, showing various information about the shortcut. Locate and click on the “change icon” button.
- A new window will open, showing you your choices for the new icon. Select your desired icon and click “ok”.
- You should be looking at the Properties window again. Click “ok”.
- The selected shortcut’s icon will be changed.
