Performance Issue - 'NT Kernel & System' using 50% CPU
Server 2008
In Task Manager: Image Name = System, User Name = SYSTEM, Description =
NT Kernel & System.
So I have had a hunt around using Google but very little info.
A thread in Experts Exchange said to right-click on the process and then
Properties for more details. Have done so but Proprties does not pop up.
Re: Performance Issue - 'NT Kernel & System' using 50% CPU
Tom,
Do you mean it is at 50% CPU all the time?
You could get hold of Process Monitor from sysinternals, restart the
computer, start Process Monitor and see what is happening,
Re: Performance Issue - 'NT Kernel & System' using 50% CPU
Not all the time but it went on for at least half an hour while I was
watching it and hoping it would disappear so I posted the question - it did
eventually.
Re: Performance Issue - 'NT Kernel & System' using 50% CPU
I am also seeing this process running on my computer with suspicious behaviour. I run a bandwidth monitor program so that I can watch how much ISP bandwidth is being used since my ISP degrades my bandwidth rate if I exceed a certain monthly limit. A number of times I have seen the bandwidth monitor showing large transfers in progress when the computer should be idle. On Windows Vista I then run perfmon (which comes with Vista) which will show the system cpu, disk, network, etc. utilization, and which will show the processes using the network utilization and the addresses they are transferring to. The NT Kernel & System process is always the one doing the transfer, and it has connections to addresses outside my local subnet, and it also has connections to other computers in my house and is actively transfering data between the computers. I don't have any programs running which should be transfering data between my computers that I know about. This seems very much like a virus and/or spyware spreading itself.

I had the same problem. Surprisingly I pressed "End process" and now it is ok!
Re: Performance Issue - 'NT Kernel & System' using 50% CPU
I had the same problem after I put the computer to sleep, after I woke it up the processor was going at 56% Going into Task manager and ending process did not work. So I don't put it to sleep or lower-power state. It works for me. Also I have set the computer not to go into sleep automatically. Control panel/power options/never put the computer to sleep. Works for me.

Did you installed Hyper-V?
If yes, check if it's running a virtual pc.
