Using a eBook reader as a second monitor for a computer

Let me know whether it is possible to use ebook reader in dual display setup with a computer monitor. I would like to use e-ink computer screen. also it should have support for VGA and DVI port support. So tell me if any ebook reader is capable to do so. I request to also let me know how can I setup it on my computer?

    Any help appreciated.

Well I such condition I can suggest you Kindle DX 11. But in order to configure it with the computer you will need to have OpenInkPot . And as there is no support for Bluetooth or WiFi , you will need to use USB cable. By default all EInk readers are powered by Linux. I think the configuration process should be really easy. You cannot use it with Windows system. However in that particular situation you will need to use Cygwin/X.

Re: Using a eBook reader as a second monitor for a computer

I am posting below steps that you can use for configuring Kindle DX as a computer second monitor. Make sure that following things are meeting
    • Mac OS X 10.6.8.
    • Vine Server 3.0

Download and install Jailbreak mod and UsbNet mod for Kindle DX from the internet

Now here begins the main steps,
    1. Select Menu, select Settings , Select Menu and select Update Your Kindle. It would result into rebooting of the device.
    2. Extract UsbNet mod at USB storage root of the device.
    3. Now repeat very first steps again.

To steup VNC on your system you need to do following,

Download Kindle VNC viewer from the internet. After finishing with downloading, simply copy kindlevncviewer directory at USB storage root of Kindle DX. After that, you need to download and install Vine Server on your system.

Now perform below mentioned steps on Kindle DX,
    • After pressing Del key, type ‘debugOn’ , hit enter,
    • Againg press Del key, type’ usbNetwork’ , hit enter.
    • Once again press Del key , type ‘debugOff’, hit enter

    .

You will be prompted with a message when you will make an attempt to connect Kindle DX with Mac OS X though USB cable. On that prompt, click on ‘Network Preferences...’ button. Put IP Address as 192.168.2.1 and subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0 while configuring IPv4.

To check out whether it is working or not, simply execute following command on telnet.
    Code:
    telnet ‘IP address ‘
to complete the process you need to execute,

    Code:
    [root@kindle root]# killall kindlevncviewer
