How to clean install Windows 7 in Sony Vaio FZ

I have a new Sony Vaio FZ that I purchased yesterday. I want to install Windows 7 on it. It has a 32 bit processor so I’ll need to install a 32-bit version of Windows 7 on it. Can someone help me with installation of Windows 7, I have installed Windows XP in past, but I haven’t installed Windows 7 yet? I need some suggestions too which will help me in installation.

Installing Windows 7 is easier than installation of Windows XP. If you have installed Windows XP, then you can easily install Windows 7. Windows XP had a weak interface which came during its installation. Many steps needed the user to think before selecting. But Windows 7 has simplified this process. It provides a good interface which makes you feel that you are not installing an Operating system but some usual software. Also the best thing about Windows 7 is that it has many common drivers built in it. So you won’t have to spend time installing the basic drivers as in Windows XP. In installation of Windows XP, the most confusing thing was setting the size of a local drive on a hard disk as the numbers would be given in bytes. You needed to calculate amount of bytes in each gigabyte. But Windows 7 installation have directly allowed user to select the values in Gigabyte. So the difficulty has been reduced.

After installing Windows 7, change the UAC settings to not notify about available updates and new features. If you leave it to its default settings, then Windows 7 will keep prompting to install new updates, drivers and utilities. It will become irritating while working as many times you are presenting a PowerPoint presentation to someone and suddenly pop-up comes up saying that you have a new update available. To avoid this, disable the UAC settings. Also in many versions of Windows 7, the extensions of the files are visible by default. You will need to hide them as many time during renaming, the user forgets to add extension causing the file to become unstable.

You are using Sony Vaio FZ, that means that the default chipset in your laptop is Intel PM965/ GM965 chipset. You will need to install its drivers as Windows 7 won’t provide any drivers for it by default. Open the ‘Run’ from the search panel. In the run panel, type ’infinst_autol.exe’ and add a ‘-overall’ after it. It will look like ’infinst_autol.exe –overall’. This will automatically check for the updates related to your chipset and will upgrade it. After the drivers for the chipset are available and updated, install the ACHI and SATA drivers. This should be done because many times the drivers for the chipset overwrite the SATA drivers.

The GPU that is available in the laptop requires Nvidia Verde 296.10 WHQL drivers to operate. You will find a zip file of these drives on the official website of Nvidia. Extract the setup file from the downloaded zip file and install the desired version that it provides. These drivers will replace the files of display driver that are installed by the chipset drivers. The setup will include updates for Nvidia driver, PhysX drivers, 3D vision components for support of multiple monitors and Nvidia audio files. Much time the Windows firewall and other security components will notify you that the files you are trying to install are malicious. Ignore his warning and continue installation.

Your laptop will also need Toshiba Bluetooth Stack 8.00.03 drivers for supporting the Bluetooth that your laptop has. You can download these drivers from official website of Toshiba. After you download the drivers in a zip file, you will see that it consists TosBtChk.dll file in it. You have to copy and paste this file at C:\Program Files (x86)\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack to enable the Bluetooth of your laptop. If there is already a file existing by this name, replace it. Now restart your computer and your Bluetooth will start working. I suggest you to disable Bluetooth radio as it consume a large amount of battery.

This laptop has many special buttons for media and internet built on it. These buttons to have its own drivers, you need to install them too to make them functioning properly. You can find these drivers on official website of Toshiba. Once downloaded the file will be of name Special button_VCC.zip. Extract this file to find a setup file in it. It will provide you options for selecting functionalities that you want to apply. It will modify the Toshiba’s control centre configuration files. You will find the M18999.xml file for the configuration of special buttons. This file should be placed at C:\ProgramData\Sony Corporation\Setting Utility Series\Function, if a similar file exists, then replace it with the new file.

Your laptop will also need utilities for Wireless Switch Switching. These utilities also can be found on Toshiba’s website. These utilities are needed to activate the wireless functions of laptop. After installing these drivers, you can switch the wireless bands from 2.5 GHz to 5 GHz. This is done due to Intel 4965 adapter. This adapter is found in device manager’s advanced tab. Change it to wireless mode. Right click on it and change the device to ‘Generic Bluetooth Adapter/ Bluetooth USB Controller (ALPS/UGPZ6)’. Set the values as a - 5 Ghz, b - 2.4 GHz, g - 2.4 GHz, default - a/b/g and n enabled.

The architecture of Windows Vista and Windows 7 are so same that you can try this same for installation of Windows Vista too. The only difference that might come is in the graphic drivers. This part of Windows Vista is different than Windows 7.
