Need to install New Linux/Ubuntu on Dell Latitude D610

I have got a old Dell Latitude D610 laptop which is based on Linux/Ubuntu. I am really a newbie to Linux and have been a Windows uses. This laptop contain 2 GB RAM and an Intel Centrino CPU. I would like to install Linux Distribution in it but i dont know which one to choose from. Where to start? Some rumors saying that many people are not choosing Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10. why?

I forget the Ubuntu 11.10, because Canonical has worked to put the Unity and it seems that is problematic. In any case prove with Ubuntu 10.04 (which is more traditional, and it's LTS), or a LinuxMint or, if you can like the KDE desktop, with PCLinuxOS, or Pardus. Other alternatives may be Mandriva, DebianMint, etc..

If you do everything online anyway Ubuntu is definitely nothing wrong.

If you want to gamble too small games I would assume Windows XP. However, since the focus is not I would advise you to Ubuntu.

Linux would run quite well. The hardware is relatively old, and for the Intel graphics, there are good drivers.

This is my work notebook, provided by my use. I'm dual-booting with XP Pro (standard image) purpose Spend 95% of my time using Linux.

I'm coming from the Debian world, so I'm quite comfortable with Ubuntu , Which I thing for STIs more recent and more polished desktop packages (kernel, x.org, GNOME, etc ...). The Ubuntu kernel guys managed to Produce Even the first 2.6 kernel I Tried That made my Firewire disk work for Any Period of Time!
