ThinkPads enjoys a high degree of attention. The business companion se is standard equipment in many businesses, with field staff, in offices and also for ambitious private users. But the current Lenovo X220 has raised alone by the available IPS display a lot of greed. This particularly pleased with those who suffer for years for lack of alternatives under low-contrast and viewing angle-dependent display. But the other principle components available such as Intel Core i7 CPU 2620m, USB 3.0, internal UMTS, mSata SSD or promised a term of up to 23 hours, many hearts beat faster. But miracles cannot accomplish the ThinkPad X220.

Black and gray plastic with a roughened surface has been imprinted notebook generations the appearance of genuine ThinkPad series. There are no high-gloss paint, no chrome, and certainly no design gimmicks. Only the massive metal hinges that connect the screen to the base unit and the red bump in the middle of the keyboard visually stand out a bit.

The X220 also follows this tradition and provides a very rigid chassis, which can be described as exceptionally resistant (according to MIL-SPEC Lenovo tested). Subfloor, as well as large parts of the palm rest are hard as rock. In the same direction with the crack initiated fixed battery, the display hinges, and the grand total of rigid display cover. Either by pressure on the back or on the frame image can provoke changes on the screen.

ThinkPad X220 is not perfect. The area of the palm rest above the ExpressCard slot can be even with moderate pressure to bend the ThinkVantage bar are a bit wobbly and the lower display frame between the hinges is positively expressed, quite flexible. While these issues have little relevance in practice, ensures the thin screen bezel above the display hinges for even more persistent concerns. Even after a few minutes of use in the blazing sun, the material is heated so strongly that developed an immense and very unsightly bulge material. Although it disappears almost completely after cooling again, in the long run this situation is not very reassuring.

Typical business interface may also be missing for a small non-12.5 "notebook. Lenovo does not burn here. So you can rely on two monitor ports (display port and VGA), a docking port, Kensington preparation and fingerprint scanner.

Lenovo X220 accepts clicks on the whole surface. This is achieved at the lower end, where one would normally expect the best and most appropriate buttons at the top of the worst. Usual basic functions go well, multi-finger gestures are more difficult to implement and do not enjoy here. Unfavorable turns out after some use the time ahead is drawn down over the edge Touchpad. Here one touches on writing and placing the palms over it frequently moves the cursor and thus unintentionally.
