Recommendation to Motorola - Device Update Process

Seems like that there is a lot of noise getting the 3.1 update for Wi-Fi Motorola Xooms. In order to update before anyone else clearly some are frustrated while others simply waiting with a lot of patience and do not want anything to hamper the device stability. At this time given that many Xoom users are early adopters and like to experiment with their device and the majority of the people are from those who want the update immediately.

That's surely is an interesting idea, but you can’t forget that the most of the "testers" who are always eager will still get upset if their device gets stuck. And every such device which is still under warranty really requires a lot of care and manpower for shipping from Motorola to/from Motorola repair facility, Re-flashing a working Motorola mobile software or image/kernel/etc. and during the process dealing with the Motorola’s angry customer emails.

If you ask me, I would change the only thing in the future is by not making the initial point of the update exclusive to one set of users over another. Making it random, so rather than fragmenting us, that Xoom remains a community into privileged MFN Xoom owners, privileged Xoom owners with Verizon, and The Rest Of Us. Then there will be simply the lucky ones and the people who need to wait for the official OTA update.

Frankly speaking, I think that it doesn’t make any sense that the whole Feedback Network getting the release first. In 3 days or even 3 weeks, how much testing and Feedback they can provide prior to a completed general release for that matter. Perhaps they should have been testing betas for several weeks or months not days; but wither way a release is completely should be treated as release and it should not be handled as beta. That’s what I think about it.

Now we can only hope sincerely that the only feedback they provide is positive. It's a very important step we think. It Just makes sense testing with a few thousands first, before going for hundreds of thousands or millions of owners. Before the “soak” test, of course we do extensive testing. But things can always show up when you have, say hundreds and thousands of testers that may not show up with dozens. To test everything, there are just too many variables among owners. To address issues, we have had a couple of cases where we stopped rollout. There have been many of those, thankfully!
