It might be issue with your audio driver check for the "Window Audio" service to resolve it click on Start and in search write services.msc and click on "Enter". Services window will display "Windows Audio" check for the status which should be set as "Started" if its not then you must change it to started. just double click on "Windows Audio" and make startup type as "Automatic" and press OK. If this is the cause then it will be solved after settings.

It might be the issue related to hardware and software both so to resolve it just go for updating your firmware i.e. hardware and software which includes ROMs (read-only memory), PROMs (programmable read-only memory), EPROMs (erasable programmable read-only memory) that is usually the solution to the problem just Go to run and type dxdiag and then search for your sound card settings.

The problem can be because of BIOS or audio driver which may be not functioning to fix it just do as mention :
    • Update the BIOS from official website of manufacturer.
    • Also download the "Chipset" and "Audio" drivers for your hp pavillion laptop.
    • Ensure that you install the "Chipset" drivers first after which you can install the "Audio drivers".

This may be because of some hardware failure i.e. your audio driver might have damage physically because of which it is not functioning properly so try to fix it with the concern of some hardware specialist which will tell you the fault. or this can be issue with the cables which are used to connect driver to the speaker or other device. so this will surely resolve the problem if it is due to hardware.

I have the exact same problem as the OP. Same computer same problem. I'm also getting a message on boot up saying something like "HP QuickStart On Screen Display Not Working" although this is probably a symptom of the problem rather than the cause.

This started about 10 days ago when sound just disappeared. Then the next day on boot up it was back. I was watching a video in WMP and about halfway through the sound went out and the problem was back. Hasn't come back since. I'm not getting any sound device listing in Device Manager at all. I've done the driver update thing. I've tried so many things that haven't worked.

Since you have updated the drivers and still the problem is persisting, that means there is something wrong with files of operating system (system files). Have you tried to reinstall your operating system? Also I would like to recommend you to install the fresh copy of your operating system. Because many times only repairing doesn't work. After installing still it is not working then try the steps mentioned by the 'Regina'.
