    Slow performance in iBook

I have an Ibook which is installed with Mac OS X 10.5.2 on it. The Ibook was working fine but now the performance of the Ibook is really degrading. Recently I upgraded the operating system on my Ibook and since then I can see that all the applications take long time to open. Video playback is glitchy and choppy too. Can operating system upgrade create such problems in the iBook? If anybody else is suffering from Slow performance in iBook then please share some information which might me useful in solving the issue.

Sometimes the invalid entries get stored in the system RAM. If the system memory gets flooded with invalid entries then the operating system will not work properly. You will have to clear all the invalid entries from the system memory of the system. To clear all the invalid entries from the system memory, do a PRAM reset :-
1.Locate the following keys (Apple, Option, R and P)
2.Press and hold the following keys while booting.
3.Keep the buttons pressed till 3 startup chimes are heard.
4.Release the keys when 3rd startup chime is heard.
Let the system boot normally and then see if the performance of the ibook improves.

There must be lot of applications running in the background because of which the system performance is degrading. Every application requires some memory and CPU usage to be allocated to be executed. If lot of such applications are running simultaneously then the system performance is bound to degrade. Go to the apple menu and open the activity monitor. Check all the processes which are running and then terminate all the processes which are unwanted. After terminating all the processes which are unwanted, check if performance of the system is improving.

I think the iBook which you are using is getting overheated due to which the performance of the computer is suffering. To process any application or process, CPU has to work. Processing any application, heats up the processor. If the processor of the system gets heated up beyond the threshold level then it will take long time to process any new applications/process. Therefore check if the ibook is getting overheated or not. Check if the cooling fan is working properly or not. If the cooling fan is covered with dust then clean it and then check the performance of the computer.

It is possible that the operating system upgrade which you carried out on your system had some problems and hence your system is not working properly. Whenever update procedure is carried out, the files which are related to the old version are replaced by the files of the new version. If during this process if the system encounters some problems like internet fluctuation, then the files are not replaced properly and hence will create problems in normal working of the operating system. Try to update the operating system again and see if it helps or not.

    Re: Slow performance in iBook

By looking at the problem it is clear that the operating system on your ibook has got corrupt and needs to be reinstalled. If you have the installation disk of the operating system which you are using, then insert in the drive and boot the system from the drive. Let the installer load and give the installation option. Install the operating system in install/archive mode. Install/archive mode helps the user to use the application which are installed on the previous operating system. Reinstalling the operating system on the system will solve the problem.
