If the problem persists after you restart the apple mobile device service, you must remove and reinstall iTunes and AMDS.

    1. Uninstalled iTunes and apple mobile device service completely.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes. When you install iTunes, you also install the AMDS.
    4. Restart the computer.
    5. Start iTunes and connect your iPhone or iPod touch. Windows should recognize the device correctly.

I met a number of suggestions to uninstall iTunes and QuickTime, then the iTunes installer to install both. I did along with the removal of support for mobile devices from Apple and then reinstall and everything worked for me. My theory is that uninstall support for mobile devices is what really did it. I would recommend that you first uninstall QuickTime then itunes.
