Wireless problems in Dell latitude c610

Please help me as I am in real fix. I have a Dell latitude C610 laptop which is working on Windows 7 operating system. Other than laptop I have a desktop computer which is also running on Windows XP and has an internet connection which is provided by a Linksys wirless router. I am facing Wireless problems in dell latitude c610. Sometimes the laptop is not able to connect to the router using Wifi and if it gets connected then the connection between the router and the laptop keeps on dropping. I cant figure out what is causing the problem and hence need your help in solving the issue. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

It is possible that the router is not able to handle the traffic that is created by both the computers and hence you are getting disconnected while communicating. All the routers work on the software known as the algorithm. If the algorithm of the router is not advanced enough to handle the traffic of both the computers and hence the computer is getting disconnected from the network. Try upgrading the firmware of the router and then see if the laptop is able to access the internet through router properly or not.

Check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly on the computer. If the drivers for the associated devices are not installed on the computer then the device will not work properly. To check if the drivers for the network adapter are installed and working properly on the computer, go to device manager. Locate and select the installed network adapter from the list populated on the right side. If there are any caution signs against the device then follow the troubleshooting procedure and check if the laptop is able to maintain connectivity with the router. If the troubleshooting does not help, then try updating the drivers of the laptop.

As you are using Windows 7 operating system on the laptop, it could also be the reason due to which you must be getting disconnected from the network. The default IP version of Windows 7 is IPv6 while the default IP version of Windows XP is IPv4. Hence the DHCP of the router must be assigning IPv4 address to the Windows 7 computer which must be leading to protocol mismatch. Disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7 and then see if the laptop can connect to the router or not. To disable the IPv6 support, open the TCP/IP properties and remove the checkmark against "Enable IPv6". Once done, save and apply the settings and reboot the computer.

Scan the laptop with some updated antivirus. It is possible that the laptop is infected with some virus which is causing the disconnection of the laptop from the network. Some virus's have the tendency to continuously broadcast some data on the communication channel. If the communication channel gets flooded then the router will disable the connection to the device which is creating unnecessary traffic. Hence scan the computer and check if there are any files which are infected. Repair or quarantine the files which are infected and then try connecting the laptop to the router.

By looking at the problem it looks like the network interface card which you are using is not working properly. If the network interface card is not working properly then the computer will not be able to maintain the connectivity to the router. Therefore check the NIC of the computer. To check the NIC of the computer, ping the software test port of the NIC. Type "ping 127.0.0.0" in the run tab and hit enter. Now command prompt window will open which will show the errors in the data sent and received. If there are any errors in the data sent and received then the NIC is faulty.
