    Problems with Gateway MT6728 laptop

Hello there, I am facing some random problems with the Gateway MT6728 laptop which I have been using from last year. The laptop was working fine till now, but recently it started behaving weirdly. Now the laptop will not start even when the power button is pressed. When the power button is pressed, no LED of the laptop will glow and there is no hard disk moment. I cant figure out why Gateway MT6728 laptop is not booting hence need your expertise to solve the issue. The laptop is installed with Windows XP operating system. Please help.

If the computer is not able to access the system RAM then it will not be able to boot. All the files which are required while booting the operating system are first stored in the system RAM and then are executed. If the system is not able to store any files on the system RAM then it will not be able to boot the operating system. Hence open the laptop and remove the RAM chips of the laptop. Clean the connecting terminals of the RAM and then replace them in their slots. If you have multiple RAM chips then try and boot the computer using single RAM chip at a time.

The button cell which is situated on the motherboard, must be out of charge and hence the system is not booting. Open the laptop and locate the button cell on the motherboard. Remove the button cell and check the voltage across the battery using a Digital multimeter. The voltage across the battery should be around 2.5 to 3 volts. If the voltage across the battery is less than 2.5 volts then you will have to replace the battery. Once the battery is replaced, you will not face any problems while booting the computer.

All the laptops face the problems with the residual charge storage in them. Residual charge gets stored around the RAM chips of the laptop which makes RAM chips inaccessible to the system. If the RAM chips become inaccessible to the system then the computer will not be able to boot the operating system. The only solution to solve this type of problem is to remove the residual charge from the laptop. Follow the steps to remove the residual charge from the computer :-
    1. Shut down the computer and disconnect it from the AC source.
    2. Remove the battery.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
    4. After a minute replace the battery and the power source of the laptop.
Now try booting the laptop. Hopefully it works.

Remove the hard disk of the laptop and connect it to some other computer. See if the hard disk gets detected on some other computer. Download the various hard disk utilities which are available online and install it on the computer. Run all the diagnostics test on the hard drive and see the results. The diagnostic tool will tabulate all the errors which are faced while running the tests on the hard drive. If the errors can be solved, then the utility itself will prompt you to solve it. If the errors cannot be solved then you will have to replace the hard drive.

All the functions which are performed by the computer are controlled by the motherboard. If the motherboard itself is faulty then the computer will not work properly. As the laptop is not able to power up, it could be because of the faulty motherboard. Take the laptop to the nearest service center and get the motherboard of the laptop checked. If the motherboard of the laptop is faulty then there is no other option than to replace the motherboard of the laptop.
