Flash Drive not detected in Mac Pro

I have been using the Mac systems for a quite long time now. I have a Mac Pro which is installed with Mac OS X 10.3 on it. Recently I bought a USB flash drive to store some data but the Mac Pro does not detect the Flash drive when it is plugged in. I cant figure what is causing the problem. Is it possible that the flash drive is faulty? Or is this an operating system issue? Please help.

It is possible that the USB flash drive which you have bought is faulty and hence it is not getting detected. The flash drives are most unreliable method for data storage. The data on the drive can get corrupt if the drive is not stored properly or if the drive sustains a physical shock. Also the drive can go bad if it is not ejected properly from the computer. As the Flash drive is new, you can get it replaced and then check if the new drive is getting detected on the Mac pro or not.

Re: Flash Drive not detected in Mac Pro

The operating system which is installed on your Mac system is very old and I think it does not support flash drives. Flash drives are modern age storage devices which are not supported by the earlier operating system. Mac operating systems later to Mac OS X 10.4 support flash drives. Hence upgrading the operating system may solve the problem. Get the install disk of Mac OS X 10.4 or later and insert in the Drive and boot the system from the disk. Install the operating system in Install/archive mode which will enable you to use the applications which are installed on the earlier versions of the operating system.

Check if the drivers for the USB controllers are installed and working properly on the system. Every peripheral connected to the system works properly only when proper drivers associated to the device are installed on the computer. Drivers work as the mediator between the operating system and the device. If the proper drivers are not installed then the USB controller will not work properly which will cause problems like detection of the drive. Go to system preferences and check the Installed drivers. If necessary update the drivers which are installed on the computer.

Try changing the port on which the USB flash drive is connected. It is possible that the port on which the drive is connected is faulty and hence the flash drive is not getting detected. Try connecting some other data storage device to the same USB port and then see if it gets detected. If other device also does not get detected on the port then port is faulty and only way to solve the problem is to replace the logic board of the computer.

Mac system detect the external data storage drive as separate drives and not as removable media. Hence the drive will not get detected if it is plugged in while the computer is on. Shut down the computer and then connect the drive in the USB port of the computer. Now start the computer with the flash drive connected. The operating system will detect it as a separate drive and can be seen in apple menu.
