iTunes only keeps a backup created during the synchronization process of each device. If you restore your iPhone or iPod and choose a new device configured as the configuration of your iPhone / iPod touch screen, iTunes automatically sync and create a new empty backup to replace the previous backup. If you change your mind and want to restore to its former state, will have to recover your backup device Time Machine before (on your Mac), or backup solution you use regularly.

Re: How to backup and restore the iPhone

While restoring a backup of iTunes, the iPhone settings, downloaded applications, audio, video, photography and content are re-synchronize the device because the "Sync" option under the respective tabs will be checked in iTunes to restore from a backup. If you decide to restore the device as a new user, downloaded applications, audio, video and photo, will not synchronize until you select the option "Sync" option in iTunes on each tab. Use the following steps to restore your iPhone or iPod touch:

    1. Connect your iPhone 3gs to your computer.
    2. Select 3gs when it appears in iTunes on devices.
    3. Select the Summary tab.
    4. Select the restore option.
    5. Then follow the instructions.

When backing up data via iTunes-like application settings, preferences for location services, voice memo, and call history are saved.

    1. Connect your iPhone to the computer and wait until iTunes recognizes the device.
    2. Right click (or Control-click) on the iPhone and you see two options: Back Up and Restore from backup.
    3. Now you will know immediately where you need when you forced to backup. To restore a backup of course choose Restore from backup.
    4. All you have to do is wait until the backup is put back. This can sometimes take quite a few minutes: as you've seen in our previous tip, the backup files running ...
