How to backup and restore the iPhone

Hi,

I am planing to purchase a new iphone 3GS. I want to know, is it possible that, I would be able to transfer all my data over to the new phone. If yes, what is the possible transfer method ?? OR How to backup and restore the data to new iPhone 3gs ???

iTunes only keeps a backup created during the synchronization process of each device.
