I think a great camera for you would be one that has a long telephoto range, and image-stabilization to keep things steady when you're zooming in. Nikon has always been noted for macro capability.

One of the pleasures of having a compact digital camera is being able to shoot lovely macro images without having to purchase extra accessories or lenses. Olympus SP-550 has a super macro mode from 1cm and at the other end of the scale a built in 18x optical zoom which is great.

I own a Powershot G7 and am very happy with the macro shots. Also, by having a more advanced camera, you can use the aperture priority mode to get a better depth of field, so more of your subject is in focus. Macro mode enables you to get very close to your subject and capture its delicate structure.
