Adding more memory to Laptop

Hi
Like to upgrade Ram on my notebook.Planing to add 512 mb with existing 512 mb which is Samsung DDR2 PC2 533 4200. Purchased a stick of Crucial DDR2 PC2 533 4200 put it into the open slot and restarted the laptop but it shows still 512. tired to interchange the slots the memory to become a shoddy work,put the new stick in either slot and it still showed 512mg. Any ideas here I could use some help.

Dude,which is your operating system?since Windows 98 FE & SE cannot use more than 512 MB of RAM without changes to the system files. windows XP can use as much as you can afford and fit.1ghz is fast enough to run XP.To know more about this follow this link

I would like to know what the specification.Are you running 4200 in one slot which is your samsung DDR2 PC2 533 4200 and another one in the other?.Normally you should match gradients, it is not a good idea to mix and match, that is very likely the trouble maker..

What is the model of your Mother Board?Have you verified the RAM compatibility at Crucial.com?.If your original ram is good, works on its own and fails when you add the second RAM then works again when the second RAM is removed you likely have the wrong part purchased.
