Laptop purchase advice required

I would like sugestions regarding the purchase of a new laptop.

I want a strong, no-fills working model for intensive work.

Plus points for me
good and large display, processor, memory, storage capacity, sound system. Built in internet connectivity would be welcome

Things I don'tneed
Fancy gadgets, card readers, web cams...

Of course, I am not a millionnaire type so I want all this at a good price.
Brands I am looking at are (in the order of preference) Sony; LeNovo, Compaq, Dell...

if people have had bad experiences, they can tell me what NOT to buy!
