Your Dell Memory Inspiron 5100 only supports modules made with a specific type of chip build. Try this, go into setup, and don't change anything, but save and exit. If you can get into setup that is. If not, try making sure the ram you're adding is compatible with your laptop. Dell is notorious for the preparatory hardware. Is the memory bought from Dell? If not and you are trying to mix Dell and another's memory it just may very well do what its doing.

Re: Ram issue in Dell inspirion 5100

In Dell inspirion 5100, there are 2 sockets, one is user-accessible and one is factory configurable. You need DDR 2100 (266Mhz) and this laptop only supports a maximum of 1gb, which means 512mb per slot.A 1gb stick will not work, so i would see if you can change the order to a 512 stick if you currently have a 512 installed.Your Dell Inspiron can support up to 1GB of memory. For optimal performance install the maximum amount of memory in each socket.

You can either add memory to one of the open sockets and/or remove memory from a filled socket and replace it with a higher capacity memory module. If your system is 10 or more years old, you should consider not upgrading your current system and instead replace it with a new system. I suggest that you can find a motherboard debug card, and plug it into PCI slot, when you start up your PC and it doesn't work, you can see what is the code in debug card. ultimately, you will find out where the PC stopped.
