Mebius PC-NJ70A Netbook with touchscreen trackpad

Someone in Sharp’s R&D department must have been paying attention when the Internet started mumbling about the MacBook Pro’s potential LCD trackpad. The new Mebius PC-NJ70A netbook comes packing with just that. On the inside, it’s a plain old 10.1 inch netbook, but on the outside, it treads where no netbook has gone before: it’s got an LCD trackpad to bring you movies on your mousemat!

The Mebius PC-NJ70A is the first netbook to feature a second LCD display with resolution of 854 x 480 pixels that doubles up as a touchpad. This 4-inch LCD (with LED-backlight) works with both a stylus as well as a finger. Sharp has developed a number of applications with this sensor, including handwriting recognition, playing a virtual piano, a bowling game as well as a number of imaging editing uses.

The touchpad also features an optical sensor that can automatically adjust brightness based on the ambient light. The trackpad acts as a dual display, and is touch sensitive so you can navigate through menus, and peform functions on it.Sharp has actually tossed an 854 x 480 resolution LCD right onto the palm rest, which automatically adjusts brightness based on surrounding light and can likely act as a secondary display for things like adjusting an equalizer with your digits.

Beyond that, the netbook is downright drab, sporting just a 10.1-inch display (1,024 x 600), 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a multicard reader. At 260x190x23.3-39.8mm (WxDxH) and 1.46kg it's not exactly small for a 10-inch netbook and the battery is said to be good for a mere 3h, most likely due to the secondary touch display drawing some extra juice.

The keyboard of Mebius PC-NJ70A is normal which appears to be a decent size stretching out to the edge of the chassis. Just to confirm, the touchpad isn’t entirely touch only. Sharp has placed three physical buttons below this small LCD. The design itself seems to be quite nice with a glossy display for the main LCD. It is also not the slimmest or lightest netbook you’ll find on the market. It weighs 1.46kg and at its largest point is 40mm thick (dimensions: 260×190x23.3-39.8mm).

While this Netbook is just plain standard, the optical sensor LCD is really impressive and lets you use either a finger or stylus to write memos and emails with handwriting recognition, or play piano, zoom out and in on document like you do with an iphone, and so on!

Price wise this is also a no go for most people, as it's priced at $814 which doesn't quite make it as expensive as the Sony Vaio P, but still a very expensive netbook considering the specifications.
