Someone in Sharp’s R&D department must have been paying attention when the Internet started mumbling about the MacBook Pro’s potential LCD trackpad. The new Mebius PC-NJ70A netbook comes packing with just that. On the inside, it’s a plain old 10.1 inch netbook, but on the outside, it treads where no netbook has gone before: it’s got an LCD trackpad to bring you movies on your mousemat!
The Mebius PC-NJ70A is the first netbook to feature a second LCD display with resolution of 854 x 480 pixels that doubles up as a touchpad. This 4-inch LCD (with LED-backlight) works with both a stylus as well as a finger. Sharp has developed a number of applications with this sensor, including handwriting recognition, playing a virtual piano, a bowling game as well as a number of imaging editing uses.
The touchpad also features an optical sensor that can automatically adjust brightness based on the ambient light. The trackpad acts as a dual display, and is touch sensitive so you can navigate through menus, and peform functions on it.Sharp has actually tossed an 854 x 480 resolution LCD right onto the palm rest, which automatically adjusts brightness based on surrounding light and can likely act as a secondary display for things like adjusting an equalizer with your digits.
Beyond that, the netbook is downright drab, sporting just a 10.1-inch display (1,024 x 600), 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB HDD, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a multicard reader. At 260x190x23.3-39.8mm (WxDxH) and 1.46kg it's not exactly small for a 10-inch netbook and the battery is said to be good for a mere 3h, most likely due to the secondary touch display drawing some extra juice.
