    Sonim XP3 Enduro

Sonim Technologies announced the latest addition to their family of rugged phones, the Sonim XP3 Enduro, advertized as the world's only rugged fully submersible GSM mobile phone. The phone can withstand more shocks and drops than its predecessor and can also be fully submersed for 30 minutes up to a meter deep. On top of this, it is certified to withstand a drop to concrete from as high as 2 meters.

The Sonim XP3 Enduro's robustness is due in part to the injection moulded rubber. Everything is reinforced, all the ports are covered in rubber and the entire construction process has been designed to make the XP3 as tough and reliable as possible.

Usefully, the Sonim XP3 has a built-in torch.. something that more phones should come with as standard. You can fit an external antenna to it too, which is useful if you are using the XP3 in a poor reception area. The beefy 1180 mAh battery gives up to 5.5 hours talktime and 9 days standby time. The speakerphone and ringtones have been made VERY LOUD so that you can hear the XP3 in difficult environments.

The XP3 Enduro's robustness does come with some drawbacks. For example, the screen is only a basic 128 x 160 pixel 65,000 colour panel. Why? Well, we guess that the main reason is that bigger displays break more easily, and the XP3 really doesn't compromise when it comes to toughness. There's no camera, memory slot, or any frippery like that for the same reason - these things tend to compromise the integrity of the phone. You might guess that the XP3 doesn't support 3G.. because frankly what would you do with 3G on a phone like this.

The new device is also equipped with a more powerful 1180 mAh battery. Another important improvement is the option to synchronize the phonebook with MS Outlook, which lacked in the XP1.

The Rugged Performance Standard is a set of nine benchmarks designed to measure a phones complete preparedness for extreme environments. Phones are rated on their rugged mechanics, resistance to external elements and ability to perform in the worst of conditions. Redefining “rugged,” the RPS establishes the new industry standard by which all industrial cell phones should be judged. The nine dimensions of the RPS are:

    1. Dust and micro particle proof

    2. Operational under extreme thermal conditions

    3. Water/liquid proof

    4. Durable Keyboard Mechanics/extra wide buttons

    5. Impact (drop) protection

    6. Extra-loud speakers for use in noisy environments

    7. Resistant to shocks and vibration

    8. Extra-long Battery life

    9. 3 year Unconditional Guarantee

Sonim XP3 also has the trademark unconditional three-year warranty as the original phone.

Naturally we obliged, conducting the old ‘pint glass test’ while arranging several dates with the pavement. True to the manufacturer’s claims, the XP3 emerged unscathed and fully functional. It even took several calls while taking a swim. Like the original Toughphone, the XP3 is IP-57 certified, built to withstand temperatures from -20 up to 60 degrees, repel dust and micro particles and, of course, the odd impact.

The XP3 is also geared for the walkie-talkie style push-to-talk communications. But if you want you and your builder mates shouting ‘Roger’ and ‘Wilco’ at each other you will have to grab the phone on a Vodafone contract via YouPoC.

Sonim provides this Unconditional three year Guarantee for your mobile phone (hereinafter referred to as "Product"). Should your Product need guaranty service, please return it to the dealer from whom it was purchased, or contact Sonim Support at: support@sonimtech.com

    Re: Sonim XP3 Enduro

Sonim mobile is setting the new standard for ruggedized phones. The XP3 headset was built for people who use their mobile phones as tools, not fashion accessories. It's engineered to be equally at home in a factory and forest, a construction site or a mountain, on a boat in the middle of the ocean or a dry, sweltering desert. The XP3 was created to suit people who value solidly constructed tools that are built to last rather than disposable devices.

It would be nice to see some feature advancement on the XP1, but we’re not going to argue with a phone that’s harder than a titanium-clad armadillo.
