    1. Old battery on the motherboard.
    2. Bad motherboard.
Test? Boot but go to the BIOX setup screen and put it on the screen that shows the time. Wait the same time it took to lose 7 minutes. Did it?
    3. XP is syncing time with a time server. And the BIOS clock is 7 minutes off.

    a) If the laptop is old, the cmos battery could be failing.

    b) Is the laptop setup for the correct country/time zone you are in?

If not, Windows corrects to the timezone that has been setup in the pc. This might be considerably different to your time.

Boot into the BIOS (setup) screens and check the date and time there. If the date is off by years then that verifies you need a new CMOS battery. Do not confuse the CMOS battery with the large external battery you run the computer with.

You might have a virus. Viruses now normally have trade mark which they do. Some change the desktop picture. The particular virus you have may change your clock. Download the free version or buy AVG if you don't already have a decent anti-virus and run it.

Go to bios and set the correct time. and save it. Try to check if your time zone is correct.

try changing your time zone by right clicking on the clock then click adjust date/time and it should give you the option to change your time zone.
