iPod doesn't appear on the desktop

When i connect my ipod to PC it doesn't appear on My PC. I disconnected and again connected but same problem. Can any one know what's the problem.

Try opening up Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities. Does the iPod show up in the left toolbar? if so try reformating it (Mac OS X Journaled) through Disk Utility then reinstall the software via iPod Updater.

Check Device Manager first (right-click on My Computer, choose Manage, and then select Device Manager). If no devices appear in the Windows Device Manager.
