    Epson New R-D1xG digital camera

Almost five years after introducing the R-D1 Digital Rangefinder Epson has announced that it is releasing an updating version dubbed the R-D1xG. The new R-D1xG digital rangefinder will still sport a 6-megapixel resolution sensor but adds a 2.5" color LCD, 32GB SDHC media card support, snap-on grip, enhanced EDiART image processing, and an estimated price of $2000.

This rangefinder camera translates to manual focusing using the matched images familiar to anyone who has used a film rangefinder. Heck, Epson is nice enough to let this model take in Leica lenses, making it a decent option if you're still mulling over the Leica M8 purchase decision which will cost you a significantly $3,000 higher price point. Epson has left the R-D1xG at just 6 megapixels for its CCD sensor, but unless you're going to blow up some really huge prints, this should be OK for most people. This Epson model will remain a Japanese exclusive at this moment, with no word on whether it will hit other countries later on or not. The Epson R-D1xG, like its predecessor, accepts Leica M-mount lenses, or earlier Leica screw mount lenses using an adapter.

The Epson R-D1xG is compitable with Leica M and L series lenses. It supports SDHC memory cards up to 32GB. This retro-style digital camera will be released in 9 April.

Epson was the FIRST to introduce the digital rangefinder. The RD1 actually inspired Leica to make the M8. I actually happen to know this from Leica inside, and high up. But guys, we have both models in the family, but the RD1s (a slightly software updated model of the RD1) is the one i always prefer. Forget about the Leica for the few more pixels. Epsons color rendition, perfectly balanced handling, and joy of use is simply a pleasure. Again and again.

This is very odd. It makes no sense for Epson to re-release an identical camera to what they already had years ago. It looks almost like Epson produced more than the 10,000 units and have now found the box with the remaining cameras while cleaning their warehouse.
