It is a known issue of the runners taking paper. If it is in warranty replace it. If not try to clean or adjust the mechanism.

I had the same problem, a lot of Canon printer models are listed (also in the MP series), but not the MP510. I managed to print correctly by choosing the BJC-8200 and selecting the Gutenprint driver (which you just installed).
Maybe there is another model that works even better, I choose this one because I read somewhere that it worked for the MP500 as well (although I can chose that one in the list). The model suggested on the site from linuxwizard (S600) does not give that good results with my tests (scaled ~300% with Guten driver, only yellow with default driver), but YMMV.
