Broadcom launches 802.11n chip for cell phones

U.S. Broadcom, which already in its catalog chip combining WiFi, Bluetooth and FM radio, announced this week the introduction of a new model, dubbed BCM4329, which combines again these three technologies while inaugurating taking Load of the future 802.11n standard. Target for Broadcom: offer manufacturers of mobile phones and other portable chip in a while allowing them the development of terminals connected easily.

The BCM4329 opens therefore support the 802.11n WiFi. If Broadcom ensures that this chip is capable of operating dual band, or in two frequency ranges (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), the manufacturer has voluntarily chosen not to implement the principle of MIMO (Multiple In, Multiple Out ), Which is one of the cornerstones of the 802.11n WiFi. This technology is to use multiple antennas, each providing receive any flow data, showing indeed too greedy energy. In fact, the BCM4329 should not propose, WiFi speeds comparable to those we obtained with an 802.11n router.

On the side of Bluetooth, Broadcom provides support for the standard 2.1 + EDR, while in terms of FM, the BCM4329 shall receive, but also for data transmission. Engraved in 65 nanometers, the chip will be offered to manufacturers and assemblers at the beginning of 2009.
