A PowerVR chip in the next generation of PlayStation Portable

"Imagination technologies announced a major partnership, which leads to think the use of their technologies into future portable Sony console"

A processor family PowerVR SGX, developed by Imagination Technologies Group, may have been chosen by Sony at the base of the next generation of PlayStation Portable console. According to indiscretions current architecture could be indicated by the name of SGX55x to be used in future mobile console from Sony.

Imagination has formalized that it has concluded an agreement technology to produce an architecture for a product of consumer electronics with an international, and this led to believe that there is underlying its agreement with Sony. Both companies have chosen not to comment about it, the rest of the usual practice in cases like this.

The first version of the PlayStation Portable console integrates its own chip various owners for the management of various 3D components necessary for creating scenes of videogames. Sony's policy is to ensure the greatest possible compatibility of titles developed on previous generations of consoles including the new ones. The increasing complexity of 3D architectures, even for small systems, could lead to waive part of this compatibility promoting the implementation of new technologies aimed at securing greater realism into the game.

During the month of September Imagination Technologies Group had announced that it has concluded a multi-annual agreement with a company engaged in the consumer electronics sector, focused on using its technology. It was thought could be Apple, given that the architecture PowerVR MBX is used in Apple iPhone, and that the agreement opened the possibility of seeing a Imagination architecture used in its future products developed by Apple.

I believe this is not a new version of the PSP, but the next generation of PSP, saying the PSP2.

Perhaps in this way Sony will match the computational capacity of Pandora, which is currently the most portable console capabilities. It depends on how they intend to integrate the logic of graphics Imagination Technologies, processor architecture they intend to use memories, any additional DSP, ... short, yet too many elements.

The same logic Open Pandora graphics chipset and Intel GMA500 is not sufficient to define a machine, the largest slice fact is dictated by the software with which you can exploit.
