SanDisk Sansa Fuze Gets Firmware Upgrade

Sandisk is giving Cowon a run for their money in the firmware department. Okay so they have a ways to go, but they are consistently impressing me with their releases. A few months ago they added Ogg support to the Sansa Clip and today they released a new firmware for the Sansa Fuze that adds both Ogg and FLAC.

This firmware has several new feature updates as well as many key enhancements and bug fixes, as listed below. Upon completion of the firmware upgrade, the device will turn off. Power on the device to complete the upgrade process. If the device does not initiate or complete, press & hold the Power switch for 6 seconds to reset the device and then release and press again to restart.

    Sansa Fuze Firmware Version 1.01.15

    New features:
    • FLAC codec for audio is now supported
    • OGG codec for audio is now supported
    • New Audible AAX format is now supported
    • Note: Per Audible request, type 2 and 3 are no longer supported. Users are recommended to connect to Audible Manager to update old contents to type 4.
    • Include embedded album art support for MP3 playback

    Enhancements:
    • New Sansa startup/goodbye screen and PC connection screen
    • Improved scrolling through long lists with wrap around enabled
    • Backlight setting is extended up to 1 hour
    • Improved FAT32 support for external uSD cards
    • Improved large playlist loading time
    • Improved voice recording quality responding to high sound level
    • Faster volume control for video playback
    • Enhancements made for Podcast playlist sorting and playback skipping

    Bugs Fixed:

    • Music playback
    • "Play Previous" option is missing after returning from Video, Photo, Podcasts and Audiobooks playback
    • Buttons have to be pressed twice while navigating in Album submenu
    • Rhapsody enabled devices
    • Videos converted using Rhapsody show incorrect aspect ratio
    • “Add to Library” using press and hold causes device to hang
    • Localized firmware
    • Russian language: Format confirmation message is mistranslated
    • Miscellaneous
    • Turning volume causes charging animation to jump while docked in 30-pin connection
    • Recording Option menu doesn’t exist in Voice and FM Recording list view

    Known Issues:
    • Device may display "Subscription Expired" message causing device to not respond to key presses (Work around: Restart device or press keys repeatedly to escape looping)
    • Music "Play Previous" option disappears after an item is deleted (Work around: Go to Music > Songs to access last played song)
    • Selecting playback speed to “Fast” while playing 128kbps podcasts and audiobooks causes audio to lag when backlight turns off

This new firmware version corrects a number of bugs makes some improvements on the ergonomic and notably adds support for OGG, FLAC and the illustrations integrated MP3.

The OGG and FLAC codecs are open and free. They are both promoted by the foundation Xiph.org that promotes and develops compression algorithms free patent.

The FLAC, however, is the compression format without losing the most widespread. It reduces from 30 to 70% the size of an audio source while restoring the absolutely identical.

With this update available directly from the Sansa Firmware software Updater, the main challenger to Apple in the portable market gap in terms of ergonomics and adds a real added value compared to the iPod that some find too closed. The war can continue!
