Laptop became slow after installing an antivirus

Hi,
I have installed an antivirus (symantec) on my laptop (dell) & noticed a big difference in my normal web surfing & browsing speed!
Should i uninstall it & install another antivirus may be AVG?
Any suggestions?

My computer is a P4 2.6 GHz laptop witch 512 Mb RAM and 128 Mb graphics card.
I have XP sp 3 installed!

Have you had antivirus programs in the past on this system? If so what ones? It could be a conflict.

It may have to many files on it or, just need to be defrag. There are a lot of things that can cause this.

Norton Antivirus is really not a good choice for any system, strictly speaking from experience. i advise you try either kapsersky or Bit defender. Although there might be some other reasons why it is slowing down. You will see a considerable increase in your system's response time. Virus or no Virus.

it will also help in you can download a program called hijackthis, try googling it. it is freeware. Do a system scan and Post the log here. I promise i can have your system up and running in no time.
