freecom toughdrive not detected in my pc

    Hello friends,
i've recently purchased freecom toughdrive 250gb. It is detected without any problem in my laptop[vista home premium] but not detected with any usb ports in my pc [windows xp]

i need to copy some files from my pc..

plz let me know wht to do to make it detectable in my pc.

    ===================
i mailed to freecom support, they replied
    Hello dear customer,

the toughdrive is a buspowered product and on your xp copmputer
is the usb buspower not sufficient. You shouldn´t use an usb cable
extension and shouldn´t plug any other usb device together with the
toughdrive, so that it can get the most usb power. If this is not enough,
you can help yourself out by using an active external usb hub with
a power supply on it. We usually deliver y-usb cables in such cases,
but i don´t know in which country you have bought your toughdrive.
We can only deliver such y-usb cables in that countires where the
    product is sold.
I've not plugged another usb devices at a time and i;ve connected directly with usb cable of device itself.

and blue light is seen when i plug to any usb port. but drive isnt detected.

in device manager also i've checked, device working properly written there.

Please guide me, wht is the problem? wht shd i do? i need to take my imp files from my pc to my laptop..

    Thanks.

From the reply from Freecom, it is clear that your drive is not getting enough power to be detected by the computer. The fact that the device manager also indicates that the device is working properly, still it is not shown on your PC also justifies this. As sid by Freecom, you will need a Y-USB cable in such case. These cables provides power from 2 USB ports to the USB device. You might have seen such cables most often for the external drives having 2 USB connection plugs. Check for this cable that will be compatible with your Freecom hard drive.

Please provide the config of your PC. Motherboard specifically. It might be that your mother board not supporting that USB hard drive.

Check with the Y-USB cables. If that detects, then purchasing one will solve your problem easily.

After connecting your hard drive, does it give any such message like "High speed device connected to low speed USB. The device can perform better if connected to high USB hub.", not exactly like this but something similar? Or even the PC may not give any message and wont show the device. This is the case when the device requiring USB 2.0 connection is connectd to USB 1.0. And yours must be USB 1.0. Most of the external hard drives require USB 2.0 ports only.

I've asked my hardware engineer about such y-wire, but he said he doesn't know about y-Cable.
How to confirm whether it's due to power problem only? [as blue light is seen when i connect it to pc.]

My pc specs: [quite old..2-3yrs old]

    AMD sampron - 2600+

    I've checked in bios - it's showing usb 1.0 and 2.0 both enabled. ????

    Hi

Any ideas on what this does (in the red circle)?:

and what is the name of the wire that can be attached to that?

Would it solve the problem posted by vitrag? I too have the same problem!

I'll try the Y-USB solution too...
