Snow Leopard vs Windows 7 vs Ubuntu 9.10

    Snow Leopard :
Mac OS X version 10.6 "Snow Leopard" is the seventh major release of Mac OS X, Apple's desktop and server operating system. This version of Mac OS X focuses on improving performance, efficiency and reducing its overall memory footprint compared to its predecessor Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard", rather than new end-user features. This is also the first Mac OS release since the introduction of System 7.1.2 that does not support the PowerPC architecture, as Apple now intends to focus on its current line of Intel-based products.Without any major overhauls to the existing Leopard interface, Apple has re-written the Finder in 64-bit Cocoa to take advantage of other new process improvements in Snow Leopard. These include:

    • Stacks will allow viewing a subfolder without launching Finder. Stacks have also been modified to include scroll-bars for folders with many files.
    • The default gamma has been changed from 1.8 to 2.2 to better serve the color needs of digital content producers and consumers.
    • Contextual menus which come out of Dock icons now have more options and have a new look, with a semi-transparent charcoal background and white type.
    • Expose can now display all windows for a single program by left clicking and holding its icon in the dock.
    • Windows can now be minimized directly onto their application's icon in the dock.
    • Faster PDF and JPEG icon refreshes.
    • Artificial intelligence algorithms used for selecting of columned text in PDF documents.
    • Faster startup, shutdown, installation, Time Machine backup and connection establishment.
    • Smaller OS footprint on disk, freeing 7 GB or more.
    • Printer drivers are now downloaded/installed only as needed, rather than installing all drivers and wasting disk space. The default install only contains those drivers needed for existing printers and a small subset of popular printers.
    • When searching for a network, the AirPort signal bar places show it showing 1 bar at a time until it finds a network.
    • Prefixes for bytes are now used in strictly decimal meaning when describing disk space, such that an indicated file size of 1 MB corresponds to 1,000,000 bytes, as commonly used by hard disk manufacturers.

    Windows 7 :

Windows 7 is the latest version of Microsoft Windows, a series of operating systems produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, tablet PCs and media center PCs. Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, with general retail availability set for October 22, 2009. Unlike its predecessor, which introduced a large number of new features, Windows 7 is intended to be a more focused, incremental upgrade to the Windows line, with the goal of being fully compatible with applications and hardware with which Windows Vista is already compatible. Presentations given by the company in 2008 focused on multi-touch support, a redesigned Windows Shell with a new taskbar, a home networking system called HomeGroup, and performance improvements. Some applications that have been included with prior releases of Microsoft Windows, including Windows Calendar, Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery, will not be included in Windows 7, some will instead be offered separately as part of the free Windows Live Essentials suite. Windows 7 includes a number of new features, such as advances in touch and handwriting recognition, support for virtual hard disks, improved performance on multi-core processors, improved boot performance, DirectAccess, and kernel improvements. A number of capabilities and certain programs that were a part of Windows Vista are no longer present or have changed, resulting in the removal of certain functionality. Some notable Windows Vista features and components have been replaced or removed in Windows 7, including the classic Start Menu user interface, Windows Ultimate Extras, InkBall, and Windows Calendar.

    Ubuntu 9.10 :

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, is planned to be released on 29 October 2009. When released, it will become Canonical's eleventh release of the distribution and will likely be supported until April 2011. In an announcement to the community on 20 February 2009, Mark Shuttleworth explained that 9.10 will focus on improvements in cloud computing on the server using Eucalyptus, further improvements in boot speed as well as development on the Netbook Remix. The initial announcement of version 9.10 indicated that this release might include a new theme. At the time Shuttleworth said: "Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options." The desktop installation of Ubuntu 9.10 is expected to include, among other programs, GIMP 2.6, GNOME 2.28, Mozilla Firefox 3.5, OpenOffice.org 3.1, Linux 2.6.31, X.Org 7.5 and Empathy Instant Messenger instead of Pidgin. ext4 will be the default filesystem and the Ubuntu One client that interfaces with Canonical's new online storage system, will be installed by default. It will also debut a new application called the Ubuntu Software Store that will unify package management. It is intended that by Ubuntu 10.04 that this application will replace Synaptic, Software Sources, Gdebi and possibly Update Manager.

Which on would you go with? Snow Leopard is already available for purchase. Windows 7 is not yet available for purchase but its development is finished and Ubuntu 9.10 is still under development. So for now the only option we have is Snow Leopard, and yeah its rocking...
