The Best Backup Solution : DVD or Hard Drive

Hey Guys, i'm a bit confused about a backup solution. I have my desktop computer with 500GB HDD [for Data] and 160GB HDD [for OS + drivers + Software Installation]. With proper use, i know no problem can occur, but it is an electronic device, nothing can be 100% full proof. So i want to consider a third device, should it be the DVD or HDD? Which device would preserve data for a longer time without getting damaged? Please help, Should it be a DVD : I would write the data once a week or once a month according to the data change or Should it be another HDD : I would take my backups on this HDD and store it in a safe place... What do you guys suggest, do vote. And do reply... Thanks in advance..

If you need to store large data and if you think you can store the disks properly, go for Blu-Ray Discs...

Guys at any time DVD's are the best options. since I had a personal experience with HDD backups. Just a single threat or virus & your data is gone.
So not gonna rely on hdds anymore.

I would suggest you to have another HDD of 500GB and use it as RAID 1 along with the 500GB hard disk of yours which you use for data, RAID 1 is used for mirrored setup which automatically write the data to both the hard disks, and if any one hard disk fails, the other has your data safe...
