What are the consequences of overclocking things on your computer?

I am contemplating whether to overclock my e8400 CPU and 9800GT 1gb video card on the gaming computer I am going to buy. But I was just wondering whether there are any consequences for overclocking these things? I have heard that by overclocking the e8400, it would crush an I7 CPU in it's gaming computer.

If there are consequences, what are they and is it worth doing it?

Well there are various consequences in overclocking, if not done in a proper manner then it will result in the forceful shut down. You need to look at the temperatures of the system while performing the overclocking operation. If the temperature gets overheated then it is very much hazardous for the system. So do have a look at the same and i am sure that you will be getting the necessary solution on the same.

You can overclock without increasing the voltages and therfore not increasing the amount of heat, but not by very much. And lots of heat is dangerous for your system in an obvious way :-)
Overclockng is very much worth it as you can get a respectable increase in framerate. But overclocking GPU is less complicated than OC'ing your CPU.
Just make sure you have adequate cooling or else it's popcorn time :-). I think it also voids your warranty.
