What are FSB Holes in overclocking

Hi,
I was reading a guide overclocking which will helped me to perform much better while overclocking my Intel Processor. The guide first stated that we can perform certain basic test which can use to make confirmed that the entire system is enough capable to deal with overclocking. But on the other end it also states the FSB hole and FSB walls terms which can play a major role in this. What are they and how does they work in overclocking. Does every motherboard is equipped with this.

Re: What are FSB Holes in overclocking

By increasing the FSB, you might find a disturbing phenomenon called FSB holes. Thus, for a FSB of 390 MHz, a configuration can be completely unstable and rising tensions components have little influence on the problem. Passing the frequency to 410 MHz, your PC is suddenly perfectly stable. So, you've certainly gone through a FSB hole.

That can be usually due to timing of Northbridge that increase in steps to avoid instability due to the increased incidence of the FSB. Nearly values bearings, the motherboard is highly stressed and it usually just a few MHz in addition to switching to less restrictive timings for the chipset and thus gain stability. Better learn more about this before performing any operation.

A range of frequencies with a given set of timings is called Strap. Some motherboards can specify it manually. The Strap is usually given as a Quad Pumped FSB frequency at which new timings are implemented in Northbridge. Thus, if this setting is available, it is advisable to increase it to improve stability of the machine where the motherboard is a FSB hole. Key Straps located generally at 1066 MHz, 1333 MHz and 1600 MHz, you can expect to encounter instabilities around these frequencies FSB.

Re: What are FSB Holes in overclocking

The first the CPU E21x0 and E4x00, usually have a FSB Wall. This results in a near-impossible to exceed a certain FSB using a standard Vcore. Indeed, this wall is usually around 380 MHz and the only way to overcome is to significantly increase the CPU voltage, usually beyond 1.5V. However, thanks to improvements by revising the M0 stepping, this problem tends to disappear.

Re: What are FSB Holes in overclocking

If you have a motherboard for entry-level then it is better to know that their floor supply is generally of lower quality. Thus, when your processor is over heated the motherboard is suffered a significant loss of voltage, 0.1V up, which may affect the overall stability of the machine. This is called as Vdrop and for that you need to compensate with a higher voltage CPU, which will result in increased consumption and heat processor rest. However, there are physical changes called Volt mod and Vdrop mod to eliminate this problem. However, such changes are only for experienced users.
