Is it possible to overclock the Nvidia geforce 9600GT up to the level that it can perform better than 8800GT? Is this possible to do with the Rivatuner without the risk of screwing anything up in the PC?

In One of the first GeForce 9600 gt overclocking experiments it was possible to increase the frequency from 650/1625/1800 MHz to 849/2002/2088 MHz, this is very good result for 65 nm video chip and Gddr-3 memory (with the access time 1.0 ns).
nVidia has this habit of having 3 tiers from any brand. The lowest is low binned chips and don't offer much. The 2nd and 3rd are the same, but the 3rd is done for you.
I'll tell you this right up front, just as any overclocker should: If there's an issue with an overclocked tier 3 card, tech support tells you to underclock it and it's fine. That's all brands too. Most cards that are overpriced due to automatic overclocks, have to be down clocked below the middle cards to be 100% stable...when there's an issue. Or, you just RMA the thing and give another chip a shot.
So, just saying you have a 9600GT is about 90% of the info you need, and need to give. Look at the overclocked cards, and that's about what to expect.
nVidia Geforce 9600gt overclocks very well. You can do it with rivatuner. It is very safe. Just dont click the run settings on start up button until you know that clock is stable.
Standard core clock for the 9600GT is 650. Lots of people are pushing them past 700. You can surely use Rivatuner for this.
