Need help to overclock Q6600

Hello everyone,

I recently build my new rig, and I want to overclock my Q6600 to 2.8 - 3 Ghz. I don't have any experience about overclocking, so I need help on this. After every changes made in the settings in the BIOS, the motherboard always resets itself to the optimized default settings.

Can anyone help me?

Q6600 266mhz
Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 Motherboard

On an Intel chipset, you need to first raise the FSB setting little bit at a time and then test the stability. As you will move further in this process, you will reach a point at which it will become unstable. You should than take a step back by going to keep last known good setting.

Thanks for the reply Howitzer. But I want to ask one thing that would there be any risk if I do so?

There would definitely be a risk factor while overclocking your system and that too by damaging components or even hardware failures if you are newer to this.

To get 2.8GHz or more you will need to do first get the latest BIOS. After that, you need to up the FSB. You may need to find where is 1066 (266mhz = 1066fsb actually) for the FSB speed and up it in increments of five. (eg 1071, 1076, 1081, etc) Each and every tome you will have to make sure that your mobo supports it.

As you can see it is quite easy methods, isn't it?
